First Responder Continuing Education

FIRST RESPONDER CONTINUING EDUCATION

  COURSE OBJECTIVE:  The On Duty First Responder Training Course; consists of range drills and instruction. The 6-hour continued education course focuses on instilling fundamental skills and practicing complex skills associated with the original course. After successful completion of this course, first responders who are LTC holders will receive credit of completion for the continued education course under section 411.184, Government code. The course will provide field instruction in the use of handguns, including:

 

  • Instinctive or reactive shooting 
  • Tactical shooting
  • Shooting while moving


***Weapon, holster, ammunition and other necessary equipment must match requirements of the main On Duty First Responder Training Course. Please refer to Student Required Equipment section below.


 

                                 Additional Information/Requirements:

  • No time will be allotted for practice (outside of prescribed drills) or to zero the handguns during the class.
  • Students must abide by all range safety rules. Failure to comply with safety rules will result in immediate removal from the range and result in course failure.
  • No family members, guests, or pets will be allowed at the range.
  • Students need the physical ability to move to various shooting positions and to stand for an extended period of time while participating in shooting drills.

  

This is an intermediate - advanced course where the statute requires physical demonstrations of proficiency in techniques learned in training. This includes shooting from unconventional

shooting positions: kneeling, prone (left, right, and back) and while moving.


Physical elements of the training include:

  • Tactical shooting
  • Shooting while moving
  • Physical demonstrations of proficiency in techniques learned in training


STUDENT MUST PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING EQUIPMENT:


Handgun chambered in .32 or higher caliber with at least three                                                  magazines. (Semi-automatic handguns with at least 10 round            magazine capacity is strongly recommended for this course.)

  • Must be in good working condition
  • Handguns are subject to inspection by the instructors prior to training and at any time during the training course
  • One hand towel on which to lay your handguns and ammunition during qualification

Ammunition

  • Must have a minimum of 100 rounds of appropriate training ammunition (extra is recommended)
  • Reliable ammunition is allowed/no reloads
  • Must meet SAAMI specifications (**approved list below)

Protective clothing

  • Inclement weather gear and proper range wear
  • Ear protection (over-the-ear, muff style)
  • Eye protection (clear required /tinted optional)
  • Shirt with a collar; head cover (hat that covers head and area of face, such as a baseball cap)
  • Closed-toe footwear, such as boots or athletic shoes; long pants (no shorts or capri style pants)

Appropriate holster

  • A belt or paddle holster capable of retaining the weapon with a mechanism or enough friction to overcome gravity. Shoulder or cross-draw holsters are not allowed. No holsters that use the index / trigger finger to release the handgun.
